OLIVENZA Chapel of the "Miracle of the Rice"

History

On the 23rd of January 1949, the miracle of the rice took place on this site, due to the intervention of Blessed San Juan Macias, who was to be canonized in 1975.  In that post-war period, the parish, through the institution Hogar de Nazareth, would provide food in this place to people in need. That Sunday there was not enough food. The cook, a countryman of the blessed, asked for his help and the rice began to flow from the pot from about one in the afternoon to five in the evening.

Exterior

To commemorate the event, and to accommodate the religious tourism that visits Olivenza to see this place, the parish has converted the kitchen where the miracle took place into a small chapel. The altar is a coal stove similar to the one on which the miracle took place. Behind the altar, a panel of historic tiles represents the moment of the multiplication of the rice.
